Was asking Mom this question earlier today, "If Ben had a girlfriend, and you did not like her dressing because you thought it was too reavealing for your comfort, what will you do?"
Mom's reply was that she'd not interfere with what Ben's gf wants to wear, because one's dressing is a matter of one's personal choice, and that everyone had the right to choose what he/she wants to wear. I do not see this as untrue, because all persons have the right to be left free to do as they choose. As what Robert Nozick has written before, "Individuals have rights,and there are no things no person or group can do to them(without violating their rights)" I think that everyone has a valid claim to liberty, that is, a right not to be interfered with.
Mom also said that one's dressing is not representative of one's moral values and behavior. Is it true that those people who color their hair neon green are bad? Or those with jet black hair are goodie-two-shoes? Things do not work that way! Frankly, I think in judging on whether or not a person is "good", one must consider their traits of character, and their willingness to perform acts etc. Is it not too shallow to judge a person as bad just because she wears something that is revealing?
And I'd like to question, what is meant by "revealing"? I think this is relative. To Islamic fundamentalists, the exposure of one's limbs is considered "revealing", whereas in Western culture, the threshold is definitely much higher, and girls are allowed to wear tank tops etc. Which is precisely what Mom said. She said what is one man's meat can be another's poison. You cannot impose what you perceive as ideals onto another person, because you'd be violating the other person's rights!
Well, there may be people out there who argue, "Love me, love my dog", meaning that the girl should heed her bf's mom's words and change her sense of dressing. Hey, why doesnt it work the other way round? Why is it not the mother changing her own fashion taste? How would the guy's mom feel if the girl were to say, "Oh my goodness, this is already the 21st century and you are still wearing THIS?!?!?! I guess you should be a museum display item!"If the guy's mom is unable to change her taste, then I think the least she can do is to not comment,and let the girl do whatever she wants. Afterall, she is not committing a crime, and neither is she committing an immoral or unethical act.
Perhaps this is the reason why I'd rather have a place of my own after marriage. There will be no one commenting on my dressing. And I need not change my dressing just to please someone. It is tough pleasing someone. And I really find that life will be miserable if I were to be doing things I do not like just to please someone. When I am miserable, there will be no peace.

Today marked a milestone in our relationship. It will stay in my mind forever. And, I think it did help to bring us closer. U were really brave. I know it took a great deal of courage to overcome your embarrassment. But you managed to do so. And I am glad that you did. It may be a good week till V day.
